User Guide: Searching and Getting Answers

How to search your trust's guidance and national sources, generate an AI summary, check its references and ask follow-up questions.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Start a search

  • Click the search bar on the home screen.
  • Use clinical terms, not patient details. A reminder sits under the search bar.

2. Ask a full question

  • Type a full question, for example "How should sepsis be managed in adults?". Full questions give the best AI summaries.
  • Results from your trust's guidance appear as you type.

3. Browse Internal and External results

  • Internal is selected by default and shows your trust's guidance.
  • Click External to see national sources such as NICE and national guidelines.
  • Click any result to open the document.

4. Check what's being searched

  • The card above the results shows the population (for example Adult) and the sources being searched (for example your team +4).
  • Click either one to change it.

5. Generate an AI summary

  • Click Generate AI summary on the card.
  • The answer opens with your trust's guidance first, under Internal guidance, starting with a Quick Summary.
  • Where national guidance is used, it appears under External guidance, labelled as not from your trust's policies.
  • If the answer includes doses, a warning reminds you to check them against the original sources.

6. Expand a section

  • Scroll down to see the sections of the answer.
  • Click a section title to expand it, or click Expand all.

7. Check where an answer came from

  • Each section shows a From line with the document and pages it came from.
  • Click From to highlight that document in the References panel, with previews of the pages used.
  • Click a reference to open the original document.

8. Ask a follow-up question

  • Type in the Ask a follow up question bar at the bottom of the answer.
  • The follow-up answer appears below, using the same population and sources.

9. Rate the answer

  • Use the thumbs next to Was this answer useful?
  • You can add an optional comment before sending.

Common Questions This Article Answers

Searching

Why should I type a full question?

A full question gives Ask Eolas the context it needs for a useful AI summary. Results appear as you type either way.

What's the difference between Internal and External?

Internal shows your trust's own guidance. External shows national sources such as NICE and national guidelines.

Can I change the population or sources?

Yes. Click the population or sources on the card to change what's searched.

AI summaries

How do I get an AI summary?

Click Generate AI summary on the card above your results.

How do I know which guidance an answer is based on?

Every section shows a From line naming the document and pages. Click it to see the reference.

Why does the answer show a dosage warning?

AI can make mistakes. When an answer includes doses, check them against the original sources before use.

Follow-ups and feedback

Can I ask more than one question about the same topic?

Yes. Use the follow-up bar at the bottom of the answer. Follow-ups keep the same population and sources.

How do I give feedback on an answer?

Use the thumbs next to Was this answer useful? and add an optional comment.
